BERKELEY - California head coach Mike Montgomery
On Cal's game plan:
"I decided we would just play man; go get them. At the 10 minute mark, I told them we were going to play man. Their eyes lit up, I think that really helped with our aggressiveness. Having (Allen) Crabbe on the floor opens up the floor because he is such a good shooter that the guy who is guarding him stays away (from the post). Jorge (Gutierrez) is a great penetrator. He did a great job curling. Jorge was great.
On the end of regulation:
"We actually changed our strategy. We wanted to cushion them down the floor, to make them use as much time as we could. Then at some point we wanted to foul. We were up three feeling like they were going to shoot one-and-one, knowing that the obvious strategy was to make the first and miss the second, try to rebound and get a shot. You could lose, but we decided to go for it. Actually, Markhuri Sanders-Frison tried to foul Reeves Nelson on the side; they didn't call it. At that point there were 3.3 seconds so that played even more into your strategy. That way if you foul them, and they inbound it, there is 2.2 and not enough time necessarily to do anything if we can get the rebound. We just fell asleep at the wheel, and they made it."
On the meaning of the win:
"It was UCLA at home with a TV audience. You want to win the game. If we hadn't won this, we would have tried to go out and win the next one. We want to compete with everybody, and for the most part we have."
On Cal's defense:
"We actually took some charges, and we haven't really done that. The first guy to do it was Allen (Crabbe), who just had a concussion. Harper (Kamp) did a good job. He's a good defender."
California sophomore guard Brandon Smith
On his three pointers at the end of overtime:
"In overtime, I had a feeling I was going to get another three. When Jorge drove, I made sure I was ready to knock it down if he passed it to me. When he passed to it me, it wasn't right in my shot pocket, and there was a guy coming out. I thought, `I am still going to stick this,' and it went in. "
On Jorge Gutierrez's performance:
"Jorge. Wow. That is the best game I have seen Jorge play. He was so aggressive and he took us on his back today. His demeanor after the game was the same. It was just high-fives and cracking jokes like it was just another day."
On UCLA tying the game at the end of regulation:
"I was thinking, `Oh man, we've been here before.' It is a bummer that he hit it, but heading into overtime, there was just a determination that we were going to win this game, and that is what happened in overtime."
On snapping the four game losing streak:
"This win is a momentum builder. We have been right there with every game except Washington. We still believe we can beat anybody in the conference, and tonight was one of those statement games on a bigger platform."
