Cal Baseball Dominated by Arizona State, 25-0

TEMPE, AZ - The University of California baseball team was crushed by Arizona State, 25-0, Saturday in Tempe. Six Cal pitchers gave up 25 runs on 23 hits and the Sun Devils scored in all but two innings. Cal goes to 13-20, 2-3 in the Pac-10, while Arizona State improves to 26-11, 2-3 in league.
The Bears struggled early as starting pitcher Ryan Atkinson (1-6, 2.3 innings, seven hits, eight runs, one walk, one strikeout) gave up five runs in the second inning on a three-run homer by Jeff Phelps and a two-run homer by Trent Pratt. The Sun Devils then scored eight runs in the third inning and the rout was on.
The winning pitcher for Arizona State was Chuck Crumpton, who improved his record to 5-0 by going 7.0 innings with only three hits, three walks and a career-high 12 strikeouts. Sophomore designated hitter David Sark (2-for-4) had two of Cal's four hits.
Cal will play the third game of the three-game conference series at Arizona State, Sunday, Mar. 28 at 1 p.m. at Packard Stadium in Tempe, AZ. The Bears had lost to the Sun Devils, 12-10, on Friday
