Adrian Wins 3 Races, No. 7 Cal Routs Tigers in Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. - Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian won three events and No. 7 California won five races overall on Friday afternoon on the first day of the Pacific Invitational at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. The Golden Bears, who are only slated to compete in today's events in the two-day Tigers' meet, racked up 635 points to 277 for Pacific on Friday. There is no diving in the Pacific Invitational.

Cal (1-0) was ranked No. 7 in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) preseason dual-meet poll that was released this past week.

In Stockton, the Cal A quartet of sophomore Guy Barnea, sophomore Damir Dugonjic, Adrian and senior Bennett Clark won the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:28.79, edging the second-place Cal B relay of senior David Russell, freshman Martin Liivamagi, sophomore Nick Cordes and sophomore Graeme Moore (1:30.74).

Adrian, who won a gold medal as part of the United States' 400-meter freestyle relay in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, also won the 50-yard freestyle in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 19.77; Cal swimmers had the top 11 finishes in the 50 free. Adrian, a sophomore, also won the 200 free in 1:39.95.

Liivamagi, a 2008 Estonian Olympian, raced to a 4:03.58 to win the 400-yard individual medley, with junior teammate Aaron Casey taking second in 4:06.65.

Dugonjic, a 2008 Slovenian Olympian, won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 55:59. Cal collected the top 11 times in the 100 breaststroke, including Liivamagi's second-place finish in 58.13.

Cal returns to the pool in its home opener at 1 p.m. on Oct. 30, when the Bears host Pac-10 foe Washington in a dual meet at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley.
