Berkeley, Calif. - No. 3 California had its ten-game winning streak snapped today, as No. 17 Oregon defeated the Bears in their Pac-10 home opener. The Ducks used defense and dominant pitching from Ani Nyhus, while also scratching four runs across against Kelly Anderson.
The Bears killed themselves on this day with double plays. They hit into three twin killings in total, ending any potential threat they could muster. Leadoff singles in the third by Kristen Bayless and fourth by Lindsay James were erased by pop up bunts that turned into two outs. In the fifth, Alex Sutton's single was erased by a ground ball double play.
Anderson battled throughout the game, but the Ducks got several clutch hits, while getting a couple key RBI sacrifice bunts down in the third and sixth to put runs across. Vicky Galindo almost had her head taken off twice by two rockets down the left field line.
In the sixth, Cal mounted its best scoring opportunity of the afternoon. Bayless led off with a walk. After two outs were made, James reached on an error and Spencer got aboard with an infield single. That brought Haley Woods, Cal's RBI cleanup hitter, to the plate with the bases loaded and the Bears down three. Woods grounded meekly to first to end the threat.
Anderson struck out six in her 12th complete game effort of the season. Nyhus struck out eight, shutting out the Bears for only the second time this season.
Cal resumes Pac-10 play Saturday and Sunday when the Bears host Oregon State.
