NEW HAVEN, CT - California's Jahvid Best was one of 30 players across the nation named Friday to the watch list for the 2009 Walter Camp Award. The prestigious honor is presented annually to college football's Player of the Year by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in early November and the winner of the award, voted upon by the 119 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on the ESPN SportsCenter on December 10. The winner will receive his trophy at the Foundation's annual national awards banquet on January 16, 2010 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
Best was named a candidate the Doak Walker Award given to the nation's top running back on Tuesday and has been consistently mentioned among the nation's top Heisman Trophy candidates after rushing for 1,580 rushing yards a year ago to record the second-best season ever at Cal. He is the country's leading returning rusher after averaging 131.67 yards per game last season and a 2009 first-team preseason All-American. Last year, his 8.1 yards per carry average set a new single-season school record at Cal while his 15 rushing touchdowns tied the school's single-season mark. Best was a first team All-Pac-10 selection as a running back a year ago after earning the same honor on special teams as a true freshman in 2007.
"To be considered one of the top college football players in the nation is a great honor and one that motivates me to keep working harder," said Best.
Cal was ranked No. 12 in the nation in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches' Poll released on Friday and had previously been selected to finish second in the Pac-10 in an annual preseason poll of media who regularly cover the league.
The Golden Bears held their first training camp practice Friday and begin their 2009 campaign with a nationally televised ESPN2 contest against Maryland at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 5 (7:00 p.m., PT). Cal fans are encouraged to participate in a Blue Out in the season-opener. The best way to show your support is to pick up the CalBears.com/Blueout.
