Santa Barbara, Calif. - Cal had to wait until 9 p.m. to play its first game of Santa Barbara's Softball by the Beach Invitational, defeating Florida International, 1-0. With only one game on the docket Friday because of severe rain in the Santa Barbara area, Diane Ninemire was able to combine her aces to get a hard-fought win.
Kristina Thorson started the game and got into a little trouble early in the first inning. After a bunt single and a Chelsea Spencer throwing error, Florida International had runners at second and third with one out. But Thorson induced a pop up and whiffed the final hitter to avoid any damage.
Thorson settled in to go four innings, giving up one hit and striking out five.
Kelly Anderson relieved Thorson for the fifth and turned in a dominating performance in relief - her first from the bullpen this season. Anderson struck out seven of the nine hitters she faced in three innings.
In the seventh, Cal was able to scratch out a run for the win. Spencer got aboard with a one out single to right. Jessica Pamanian was next up. She sent a ball to shortstop that was thrown away. Spencer raced around the bases, scoring all the way from first with the winning run.
Anderson made quick work in the bottom of the seventh. She struck out the side in order.
The Golden Bears hope to get at least two more games in for the tournament, although more rainy weather is expected.
