BERKELEY - California wrapped up its second week of spring football with an 85-play scrimmage Saturday afternoon in Memorial Stadium.

Despite returning just two starters from last year, the Bears' defense appeared to have the better day, recording seven sacks and batting down several passes.

"The defense flew around pretty well," said second-year head coach Jeff Tedford. "They played with a lot of emotion and intensity."

Tedford cited redshirt-freshman defensive back/return specialist Tim Mixon and junior linebacker Joe Maningo as two players who stood out on the afternoon. In addition to breaking up a pair of pass attempts, Mixon also return a punt for 40 years. Maningo, a transfer from Foothill College, had one sack, but was a constant nuisance in the offensive backfield.

Junior Reggie Robertson and sophomore Richard Schwartz split most of the time at quarterback. Robertson completed 3-of-8 passes for 10 yards, while Schwartz was 6-for-10 for 51yards, including a six-yard TD toss to Geoff McArthur.

Junior Brignac led all receivers with three receptions for 21 yards. McArthur finished with a pair of catches for 19 yards, while Randy Bundy (7 yards), John Rust (30 yards) and Marcus O'Keith (17 yards) also snagged two passes each.

O'Keith and Adimchinobe Echemandu handled the bulk of the running duties - O'Keith going for 29 yards on seven attempts and Echemandu having 18 yards on six rushes.

In his only attempt of the day, Tyler Fredrickson - who may handle both punting and kicking in the fall - booted a 47-yard field goal.

The Bears next scrimmage Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m., while the Blue-Gold Scrimmage is April 19 at 12 noon, both in Memorial Stadium.
