MADISON, Wisc. - No. 7-ranked California (2-1) fell in a 4-0 loss to No. 3 Northwestern (5-0) in the quarterfinal at the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championships today at Nielson Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. The Golden Bears had trouble getting out of the gate after a 3:30 p.m. start time was delayed until 5 p.m. and surrendered the doubles point to the Wildcats. Unable to recover in singles play, Cal gave up three quick matches to seal the deal, leaving three other matches unfinished or not played.

With the team hanging on by a thread, freshman Marina Cossou had her ten-match winning streak snapped by No. 9 Georgia Rose, falling 6-4, 6-3. Rose was a finalist at the Cal Nike Invitational in the fall of 2007. The loss by Cossou closed play for the day, and gave the Wildcats the commanding four-to-nothing win. Junior No. 31 Bojana Bobusic lost on court four to give Northwestern the 3-0 lead as she fell 6-3, 6-3 to No. 68 Lauren Lui.

After emerging from doubles play with the point, the Wildcats wasted no time going ahead as Suzie Matzenauer defeated senior Stephanie Kusano on court six by a 6-4, 6-2 score. Senior No. 10 Susie Babos opened up her bout against No. 2 Maria Mosolova with an 0-2 deficit in the first set but the players retired with the match secured and did not finish. Mosolova was also a finalist in the 2007 Cal Nike Invitational. Senior No. 54 Cristina Visico and junior Claire Ilcinkas did not make it to the court for their matches, with the outcome already decided.

The Wildcats took the doubles point when the No. 7-ranked duo of Lauren Lui and Samantha Murray defeated No. 36 Babos and Kusano in a tight 8-6 match. The win forced the end of doubles play, leaving court two undecided with Northwestern's Alexis Conill and Rose leading Cossou and Ilcinkas by a 7-6 score at the time. Bobusic and Visico weren't able to put up a fight in their loss on court three to the Wildcats' Nazlie Ghazal and Mosolova, giving Northwestern the initial 1-0 edge for the doubles point.

The Bears will now take on one of the losing teams from today's quarterfinal matches at 3:30 p.m. CST (1:30 p.m. Pacific) on Saturday. The ITA will announce the pairing after all quarterfinal matches have been completed. For complete information, draws and results, please visit www.itatennis.com
