ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Two women that are definitely not used to losing fell today in the first round of the ITA Indoor National Championships at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center. No. 1 seed Raquel Kops-Jones was upset by Anda Perianu of Oklahoma, 7-6, 0-1 retire inj. Freshman phenom Sasha Podkolzina also was upended by No. 3 seed Critelle Grier of Northwestern, 7-6, 6-3.
Kops-Jones came into the tournament hobbled by an injury, but being the gutsy warrior she is, she tried her best to stick it out. The loss is her first of the year but could figure to hurt her chances of becoming the No. 1 rated player in the NCAA. Kops-Jones had been phenonmenal up into this point winning all of her singles matches decisively.
Podkolzina had been playing exceptional tennis of late as well - making the regional finals in doubles and singles. She has also had her own battles with the injury bug over the past couple of months but seemed primed for a good showing in her first college major. Podkolzina came into the match 5-1 in singles on the year.
The two still have a chance to make an impact on the tournament as they team up in doubles competition.
