BERKELEY - The California Golden Bears and the Brigham Young University Cougars will meet Dec. 22 in the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl, University and bowl officials announced Sunday afternoon. The game will be televised by ESPN with a 5 p.m. (Pacific) kickoff.
Cal is playing in a third consecutive bowl game for the first time since the 1948, 1949 and 1950 seasons all ended in Rose Bowl appearances. The Bears are coming off of a 7-4 regular season. Cal was 4-4 in Pacific-10 Conference play, ending the year with a 27-3 win over Stanford in the Big Game.
The Cougars had a 6-5 overall record in 2005 and went 5-3 in the Mountain West Conference. BYU won five of its last seven games under first-year head coach Bronco Mendenhall. BYU's director of athletics is former Cal head football coach Tom Holmoe.
"We are obviously very excited about a third straight bowl appearance," said California director of athletics Sandy Barbour. "BYU is a quality opponent and Las Vegas is a great postseason destination." Brigham Young became an official Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl participant on Nov. 22 when the Mountain West decided its bowl destinations. Cal's trip to Las Vegas did not become official until Sunday afternoon following the announcement of the Bowl Championship Series pairings.
"The team is very excited about the opportunity to go to the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl and play in the game," Cal head coach Jeff Tedford said. "We get to match up with one of the top teams in the Mountain West Conference - BYU has such a great tradition."
California finished the 2003 season with a victory over Virginia Tech in the Insight Bowl in Phoenix. The 2004 season ended with a Holiday Bowl appearance against Texas Tech in San Diego.
"This is an exciting time for the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl as we look forward to hosting a prestigious Pac-10 program such as Cal," said the bowl's executive director, Tina Kunzer-Murphy. "Our executive committee is thrilled that Coach Tedford and his players are coming to town to take on BYU in what just may be a full house."
Cal fans can begin purchasing bowl tickets at 12:01 a.m. Monday (one minute after midnight tonight) at CalBears.com.
