BERKELEY - Cal junior tailback Shane Vereen will chat live on the Contra Costa Times BearTalk Blog on Monday, May 24, beginning at 1:00 p.m. PT. Cal football beat writer Jonathan Okanes of the Contra Costa Times will moderate the live chat in which Vereen will answer selected questions from fans.

Vereen, recently named a second-team Preseason All-Pac-10 choice by Phil Steele, is expected to become the team's full-time starter at tailback after the departure of Jahvid Best to the NFL's Detroit Lions.

Last season Vereen earned honorable mention all-Pac-10 honors and shared the team's offensive Bear Backers MVP honors along with Best after leading the Golden Bears in rushing with career-bests of 952 yards on the ground and 183 carries. His 12 rushing touchdowns also shared the team lead with Best, while his 14 total touchdowns ranked second on the club behind the 16 posted by Best. He was also among per-game Pac-10 leaders in rushing yards (No. 6, 73.23), all-purpose running (No. 6-T, 135.15), scoring (No. 10-T, 6.46) and total offense (No. 15, 73.23), while his average of 22.96 yards per kick return was sixth in the league. His signature contest in 2009 came during the Big Game at Stanford when he posted career-highs of 42 rushes for 193 yards, and also tied a career-best with three rushing TDs. The 42 rushes were the most in a game in the Pac-10 in 2009 and tied for the second-most in the nation. Among the awards he received for his performance in the 34-28 win over the Cardinal was the Walter Camp Football Foundation Offensive Player of the Week for the nation and an AT&T All-America Player of the Week nomination.

Vereen also had a strong campaign in 2008 when he rushed for 715 yards and four touchdowns on 142 carries as the primary backup to Best, while adding 27 catches for 221 receiving yards.

Vereen is already ranked tied for 10th all-time at Cal in rushing TDs (16) and is knocking on the door of the school's all-time lists with his career totals in both rushing (1,667) and all-purpose (2,693) yards. He also has five career 100-yard games, going over 150 yards in three of those contests, and is just one shy of making the school's all-time top-10 list in that category. In addition, he has caught at least one pass in each of the 26 collegiate games he has played and gained 100 or more all-purpose yards 14 times with a pair of 200-plus all-purpose-yard contests.

Cal opens its 2010 season vs. UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 4. The upcoming campaign will be the final year with the current configuration of Memorial Stadium and also includes visits from Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and Washington during a seven-game home schedule.
