Cal Crowned Pirate Invitational Champs After Going 5-1 Over the Weekend

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Cal finished tournament play at the Pirate Invitational, Sunday, with a win over Penn State, 5-0, and a loss against host East Carolina, 8-3. The Golden Bears (29-3) were crowned tournament champions, and junior Alex Sutton was named tournament MVP.

Against Penn State, senior Lindsay James was a perfect 4-for-4, while sophomore Katie Vickers finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Senior Kristina Thorson (19-2) struck out 12 of 25 Penn State batters, throwing all seven innings of the win.

Cal scored three runs in the first and one in each of the second and sixth innings for a 5-0 win over Penn State.

The Bears got on the board early with a three-run double from Sutton, scoring seniors Emily Friedman, Haley Woods and James. James led off the inning with a single. Woods walked, and Friedman reached base on a Penn State error.

James kept things going for the Bears in the second with an RBI triple, sending Vickers home. Vickers led off the inning with a single.

Cal rounded out scoring in the sixth inning when Vickers scored on a single from freshman Morgan Siegel. Again, Vickers reached base with a lead-off single.

Against East Carolina, Cal took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Pirates went ahead 2-1 in the third. Cal tied it 2-2 after three innings. ECU took a 5-3 lead after five innings of play and scored three more in the seventh for the 8-3 win. Woods hit her 12th home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning.

ECU scored all eight of its runs on three home runs - a two-run shot in the third, a three-run shot in the fifth, and a three-run shot in the seventh.

Freshman Lauren Frankiewicz (10-1) suffered her first loss of the season after giving up 10 hits to the Pirates.
