BERKELEY - Senior forward Calen Carr scored the game-winning goal to lift No. 10 California past No. 16 San Diego State, 2-1, in an exciting overtime game Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Cal improves to 12-3-1 overall, 5-3-1 in the Pac-10, while SDSU drops to 9-2-5 and 2-2-4 in conference play.
After 45 minutes of play, both teams remained scoreless despite each having good opportunities to score. In the 30th minute it looked as though the Aztecs took the 1-0 lead, after Kraig Chiles scored on Cal's keeper Eric Kronberg. But seconds after the goal, the officials ruled SDSU offsides and the goal did not count. With three minutes remaining in the first half, senior defender Tyson Wahl took a free kick that looked like it was headed into the goal, but deflected off the goal post. Senior midfilder Pieter Berger was positioned in front of the goal to receive the deflected ball and took a shot, but it was saved by the Aztecs keeper Tally Hall.
In the 67th minute, sophomore defender Jeff Serafini recorded his first goal of the season and put the Bears on the board, giving them a 1-0 lead. Andrew Jacobson passed the ball to Serafini, who found the open net from 15 yards back on the left side of the field.
In the 82nd minute, SDSU's Matt Couch was issued a red card and ejected from the game for serious foul play. With three minutes remaining on the clock and playing a man down, the Aztecs Heath Creager tied the game, 1-1. The ball was thrown into play by Omar Persad, Creager was positioned near the goal and headed it in. One minute later Raul Batista was issued his second yellow card and subsequent red card, and ejected from the game.
With the game tied 1-1 and in the first overtime, Luke Sassano dribbled down the field and passed the ball to Carr, who scored in the 96th minute from about 10 yards out to lift the Bears past the Aztecs, 2-1. Carr recorded his tenth goal of the season, six of which have been game-winners.
Cal outshot SDSU, 23-11, with Andrew Jacobson recording seven for the Bears. Senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg made four saves. Hall recorded an impressive nine saves for the Aztecs, while facing 23 shots.
Cal hosts No. 11 UCLA, Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
