BERKELEY - California head coach Mike Montgomery
On the game
"Oregon State struggled a little bit. I thought our week of preparation was good for what they wanted to do. I don't think their 1-3-1 zone is what it's been in the past. I think one of the things that happened was that in order for them to be effective offensively, particularly against the zone, they have to go small, and when they go small, their zone is not as good because it's not as big and it makes it easier to pass through it. I thought Brandon did a really good job by not getting bothered by the first side of the zone. He got it to Jorge and then Jorge was able to penetrate. With 11 assists he got the ball to whomever he wanted down low. Defensively, we did a good job of getting to shooters. We felt that the thing they did was they were able to move the ball and get four out, and they find shooters. Nelson and Cunningham shoot the ball pretty deep. By and large we did a good job with that."
On Jorge Gutierrez
"He's important. For scoring purposes, he's got to be involved. Allen's been carrying his load. We don't look at Brandon as a scorer. He's got to distribute and run the club. So to have the extra guy doing that makes us that much more effective. We moved the ball and Jorge was able to get penetration and that helped him"
On the quick start
"They were forced to go man. We were scoring pretty easily against the two zones that they had. They weren't able to change defenses up as much. We really got some mileage against the man. Getting Brandt and Burton with two fouls in the first half probably helped us a little bit, even though we went in with 10. In the first three minutes of the second half we jumped them a little bit and that really helped."
On the upcoming homestand
"We don't have the kind of team that can do anything, but prepare for our next opponent. Everybody has a little different element that they bring. You're going to see zone on Saturday with zone pressure. Then Arizona State comes in and plays the matchup. Each team has different personnel with different things."
On the multiple player contributions
"It's a little bit easier when you're up 20. There's not the pressure of `I've got to make this play'. You need those games and we didn't have those early in the season."
On Bak Bak
"Everybody likes Bak and likes to see him do that, but from my perspective, it's the game of basketball and that's what he should be doing. It shouldn't be an aberration; it should be what he does. This is where we can get the ball to him and everybody does what they do. Again, the more confidence we get, the better off we're going to be."
Junior Guard Jorge Gutierrez
On playing the zone
We don't get as tired as we did before. That's a plus. I think we're very comfortable in it. The teams are not shooting it as well as they were before."
On getting a career high 11 assists
"I'm just happy that I found a way to find my teammates. We know it's always hard to play against Oregon State. We know we had to find the right people in the right moment, and we did."
On the team's level of confidence
We're pretty confident right now. We're practicing hard. We have intense practices and all that. When it comes to game day, we are all in the mindset to win. We do everything it takes to win."
On the upcoming games
"We think we can win all of them, but we have Oregon on Saturday, and that's what we're thinking about right now. Just get the next one."
Junior Forward Harper Kamp
On breaking Oregon State's zone
Jorge, Brandon and Allen did a great job of moving the ball and penetrating the seams like coach always emphasizes and always wants us to do. I think for some reason, this group was able to do it effectively tonight. Maybe it's because they're not quite as good in the 1-3-1 as they have been in the past. We did a good job with it tonight, especially the guard."
On the team's energy tonight
"When we get good energy and get up on people, we want to maintain that, be consistent and learn that good teams are going to try and make a run if you let them hang around. So you've just got to stay on top of them."
On tonight's ability to run the break
"It's something that we haven't been as effective with the entire year. We've kind of struggled to get buckets and get out to get easy ones. Jorge especially did a good job tonight getting out on the break, attacking them and making them run back. We just looked for the open man and looked for the easy play instead of trying to make it hard."
Sophomore Forward Bak Bak
On his contributions tonight
"It means a lot, actually. It gives me some kind of confidence to play well and make sure I'm in a good position to play."
On how multiple players are involved
"It's a good balance. Last time against USC, when coach had us go big, I didn't expect that, but it was really good because we got to use our length. It limits the shots from the other team and gives us some strength inside to rebound the ball, which are all positive things."
