BERKELEY - In the face of their first true road game of the year, the Golden Bears will try to secure the best start to a season since 2007-08 when California went 7-1 through Dec. 20. Among those seven wins was a 77-69 victory over San Diego State.
The Bears have won three of the last five meetings against the Aztecs, but have revenge on their minds after they dropped a 77-57 decision, at home, a year ago. SDSU went on to complete an impressive 34-3 campaign en route to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. The last time Cal faced the Aztecs at Viejas Arena, San Diego State emerged with an 86-79 win in 2006-07.
Cal's 73-57 victory over McNeese State provided head coach Mike Montgomery with his 70 victory, at Cal. The Bears have out-rebounded their opponents in each of this season's seven games and lead the Pac-12 with a plus-9.9 rpg margin. Cal also ranks first in the league in free-throw percentage at .750 (108-144).
Four Bears average 10 points, or more, per game. Senior G Jorge Gutierrez leads the team with 14.6 ppg (9th, Pac-12), and pulls down 5.3 rebounds per game. Senior F Harper Kamp puts in 10 ppg to go with 5.6 rpg (T-16th, Pac-12). Sophomore G Justin Cobbs has quickly become a force to be reckoned with. The elusive point guard has scored 11 points per contest, this season, and dished out a career-best seven assists in his last outing against McNeese State. On the wings, sophomore G Allen Crabbe pours in 14.3 ppg and grabs 5.6 rpg.
For the Aztecs, junior G Chase Tapley leads the way with 16.3 ppg and senior C Garrett Green grabs 7.1 rebounds per game. Head coach Steve Fisher is in his 13th season and has led the Aztecs to back-to-back Mountain West crowns.
When it returns from Southern California, Cal will play four straight games at Haas Pavilion to conclude the home non-conference schedule. One more road game at UNLV on Dec. 23 will provide the Bears with one last test before the inaugural Pac-12 season tips off with a 6 p.m. PT Cal-USC game on Thursday, Dec. 29.
