Berkeley, Calif. - The Bears road the arm of their stopper, Kristina Thorson, to a 4-1 win over conference foe Oregon State. Thorson pitched her tenth complete game, recording eight strikeouts, to improve her record to a pristiine 15-0. Cal complemented Thorson's performance with strong defense and situational hitting to improve to 33-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Thorson set the tone ealry in the game. After giving up a bloop single and walk in the first, she battled back to strikeout the next two Beavers, ending the threat.
In the third, second baseman Alex Sutton made a dazzling stop and throw, ranging to her right, to make a fine defensive play.
The Bears had their best early scoring chance in the third. Vicky Galindo slapped a single through the left side and didn't hesitate to steal second. With two out, Chelsea Spencer ripped a ball In hole at short. The throw did not get Spencer at first, but first baseman Vanessa Iapala gunned home to nail a charging Galindo.
The Beavers put two aboard again in the fourth off a single and a walk. But yet again Thorson reached back for a key strikeout to end the threat.
Cal broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Roni Rodrigues led off with a hard single through the right side and Sutton reached on an error. It was Kelly Anderson who came up with the key hit up the middle to score the first run.
In the fifth, Lindsay James dropped a pefect bunt down the first base line to start the California rally. Spencer waited beautifully on a Ta'Tyana McElroy change-up to drive a single into right field and knock the Beavers' hurler out of the game. After James and Spencer executed the double steal, Haley Woods RBI groundout padded the Bears lead.
The Bears came up holding a narrow one run advantage in the sixth after Beavers' catcher Lisa Allen touched Thorson for a home run in the sixth. Cal quickly put two runners aboard with no outs after Kristen Bayless drew a walk and Anderson reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners moved up on a fielder's choice, putting Galindo at the dish in a key spot. The junior responded with a drive up the middle scoring Bayless. James went with a pitch to left to knock pinch runner Gwen Arafiles in.
The Bears went to the seventh with a comfortable 4-1 advantage and Thorson made it hold up with three groundouts.
Cal resumes its two-game series with Oregon State Sunday at 1 p.m.
