SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The California men's soccer team finished strong at the UCSB adidas Classic, defeating UC Riverside, 2-0, Sunday at Harder Stadium.
"It was a great start, but it's only two games into the season," said Cal's head coach Kevin Grimes. "We will continue to improve on the things we learned about ourselves this weekend playing two very good teams."
Senior forward Calen Carr scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 26th minute. Carr one-timed midfielder Eric Ebert's cross from the left side to the back post for a 1-0 Cal lead.
The second goal came in the 44th minute of play on a penalty kick by senior defender Tyson Wahl.
UC Riverside's junior goalkeeper Charles Alamo was tested by the Bears, recording eight saves, while senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg recorded two saves for Cal.
Cal out shot the Highlanders, 19-5 while Carr led the Bears with six shots.
The Bears come home next weekend to host the adidas Cal Legacy Classic, starting Friday, Sept. 9 with Stanford vs. Cal State Northridge at noon and Cal vs. Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m. Day two of the tournament begins at noon on Sunday, Sept. 11 with Stanford vs. Vanderbilt, followed by Cal vs. Cal State Northridge beginning at 2:30 p.m.
