BERKELEY - Continuing a streak that now spans nearly a quarter-century, the California women's tennis team will compete in the NCAA championships. The No. 11-seed Golden Bears (16-8) will play host to Illinois State (18-3) in the first round on Saturday, May 15, at Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. Times and ticket prices for the event will be announced Thursday.
It will be the 23rd-year in a row that Cal has made a NCAA postseason appearance. Should the Bears defeat Illinois State, they will play either Fresno State (20-3) or Sacramento State (23-3) in the second round on Sunday, May 16. The winner of the regional will advance to the NCAA Round of 16 in Athens, Ga., on May 20.
Currently ranked No. 14 in the nation, the Bears are led by senior Raquel Kops-Jones, the No. 1-ranked player in college tennis and the 2004 Pac-10 Player of the Year. Last year, Cal advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the fifth time in school history before falling to Stanford to end the season.
