No. 8 Cal vs. No. 25 ASU Postgame Quotes
Jan. 17, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. -
Cal head coach Joanne Boyle
"I thought this was a great game. Our team has been focused on this for awhile. We haven't won here since 1999. Charli (Turner Thorne, ASU head coach) really does a great job with her team. They play an up-tempo style and pressure. The goal this week was to be able to withstand their pressure and get good touches inside. I thought we did a really good job with that. I'm really proud of my team."
On whether she was surprised the ASU cut in to Cal's big lead
"No, because with the style they play, it's so up-tempo, and they rotate people in. If you make mistakes, they're going to capitalize. At the end of the first half, we made some lazy passes, and they capitalized on it. That's a great team. They did that and a little bit in the second half. I thought we regained composure and let them go on short runs but not long runs. That made the difference."
On Cal's shot selection
"We knew we had to take good shots. If you go back and watch past game tapes, we would fade and take bad shots. If you take bad shots, they're rebounding and running. I thought we did a really good job, Devanei in particular in the first half, of taking really good shots. We shot almost 60 percent in the first half and didn't give them transition baskets. I think that was really the difference. We also played great defense on the other end of the floor."
Cal forward/center Devanei Hampton
On her career high for points
"Coach keeps telling me not to fade, go into it and draw contact and focus on every shot. After the first three shots, the basket started getting bigger and bigger. I just kept going at them because that's what Coach told us to do. And, my team was giving me the ball, and I was feeding off that."
On how her knee feels
"It's been a non issue the last couple of days. It's getting stronger every day. I still rehab. I feel great."
On being in first place in the Pac-10
"That's just one of the many goals we're trying to accomplish right now. It's still early in the season. Everything can go end to end. Each team is competitive and is trying to go after each other...We're honored that we're in first place right now, but we have a long way to go."
Cal forward/center Ashley Walker
On being a factor late in the game
"I came out real quick before that sequence, and Coach looked at me and said, `We need you, whatever you can do. You need to get every rebound and every loose ball.' That's something that I'm known for doing. I went in there with the mindset that no matter what if I can't get a bucket, I'm going to go get every rebound. And, I came up with two quick rebounds and a bucket...I had the mindset to go get the rebounds."
Cal guard Alexis Gray-Lawson
On ASU's guards
"They're good. Tasha and I and the rest of our guards knew that was something we had to focus on. We knew we had to double down on their posts and do the best that we could. That was our game plan. We played great scouting report defense."
