BERKELEY, Calif. - University of California head coach Marianne Stanley has announced the signing of 5-8 guard LaShanthi Rhodes from Houston, Texas, to a national letter of intent to play basketball for Cal next season.
Rhodes earned second-team All-State and first team All-Region honors as a senior at Nimitz High School, averaging 20.0 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. She earned mulitple All-Tournament honors, and was named District Most Valuable Player as a senior. Her team posted a 30-7 record last season and finished as runnerup in their region. This summer, Rhodes has been invited to play on an all-star team which is traveling in Belgium.
Rhodes also earned All-District honors in tennis as a prep, and competed in volleyball and track. She was named to Who's Who in Academics (1995-97), and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and United States Achievement Academy.
"We are very pleased to welcome LaShanti to our team," Stanley said. "In addition to her outstanding ball-handling and passing skills, LaShanti has a great feel for the game. She's extremely competitive and loves challenges. Adding her to our backcourt will give us the depth we desperately need at the point guard position and an opportunity to develop her leadership abilities."
Rhodes signing brings Stanley's recruiting class to a total of three players, as 6-4 forward Shavaki Jackson and 6-4 center Latifa Lewis, both from Berkeley HS, signed during the early period in November.
