Long Beach, CA - The California women's swimming team will compete in both the 200-yard medley and the 800-yard freestyle relays tonight at the Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. The 200 medley is scheduled for 6 p.m., while the 800 free is slated for 6:54 p.m.
Cal is no stranger to dominance in the 800-free relays at the Pac-10s, claiming first-place finishes every year since 2004. The 2004 foursome of Erin Reilly, Ashley Chandler, Micha Burden and Lauren Medina posted a winning time of 7:08.13. The same foursome repeated that feat in 2005 with the same exact time, also good enough to claim the top spot. Last season, not only was that mark shattered by the foursome of Dana Vollmer, Lauren Boyle, Rachel Ridgeway and Erin Reilly, but the time of 7:05.59 was a new Pac-10 meet record.
The Bears have claimed three 200-medley relay Pac-10 titles since 1987. Cal finished in second place in last year's relay with a time of 1:39.16. This season, the foursome of Lauren Rogers, Emily Silver, Vollmer and Madison Kennedy posted a time of 1:38.86 in the 200 medley at Stanford on Feb. 16, five-tenths of a second away from tying a school dual-meet record.
