BERKELEY - Needing to get back in the win column, the No. 11 California men's soccer team did just that as it topped Oregon State, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears scored their first goal since the overtime winner against Stanford on Oct. 18. Cal improved its record to 8-3-5, 3-2-3, while the Beavers fell to 5-9-3, 2-5-1.
Sophomore Andrew Wiedeman tallied the game's only goal in the 72nd minute, with an assist from sophomore Servando Carrasco. Wiedeman, the team's leading scorer, now has seven goals on the season and 18 points total. Three of those seven scores were gamewinners. Carrasco tied for the team lead in assists with seven.
Junior goalkeeper Stefan Frei posted another clean sheet, making two saves in the process. The shutout was the seventh of the season for Frei and the 18th of his collegiate career. He is two shutouts shy of tying Cal's current goalkeeper coach Henry Foulk for fourth in the Cal record books in that category.
Cal outshot Oregon State, 18-10, with 10 of them coming in the second half.
Cal will take on Washington in its next game on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
