Las Vegas, Nev. - The second-ranked California Golden Bears got their first two wins against ranked opponents this season and improved their record to a perfect 10-0. Cal dispatched No. 14 LSU, 5-1 and followed that up with a shellacking of No. 12 DePaul, 17-0. Haley Woods had a career day at the dish with 9 RBI.
In the first game of the day, Cal opened up strong behind pitcher Kelly Anderson. Cal scored two runs in both the first and second innings to give Anderson plenty of breathing room. Vicky Galindo was the catalyst at the top of the lineup. She went 3-4 from the plate, including her first home run of the season. Woods continues to be a run producer as well in the middle of the order and had two more RBI in this contest.
Cal generated more than enough run support for Anderson, who scattered seven hits for the second straight night. Only giving up a run to the Tigers in the seventh on a sac fly, Anderson improved her record to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 at the UNLV Tournament.
Game 2 saw Woods star again from the plate. She went 3-3, homering twice with seven RBI. That brings Woods UNLV Tournament RBI total to 14 in four games. Roni Rodrigues continued her hot play as well, going deep for the second time in as many days. She chipped in with 4 RBI. The Bears were also aided by six costly DePaul errors.
Kristina Thorson again found herself well supported on the mound. The sophomore hurler, matched Anderson at 5-0 on the season, giving up four hits through five innings. She continues to average over a strikeout per inning. This time she set five Blue Demons down.
Cal concludes its tournament tomorrow against Cal Poly at 12:30 p.m. The Bears will certainly be in line for tournament champion and several all-tournament selections should they win that game.
