LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 California men's soccer team suffered its first loss Friday night against No. 9 UCLA. The Bruins defeated Cal, 2-0, in both teams' first Pac-10 action of the season. Cal moves to 7-1-1, 0-1-0 in the Pac-10, while UCLA improves to 5-2, 1-0-0 in the Pac-10.
UCLA sophomore defender Marvell Wynn put the Bruins up 1-0 heading into the half, when he scored in the 40th minute. Wynn scored on Cal senior goalkeeper, Eric Kronberg, when he rebounded a shot off the post, with an assist by junior midfielder Patrick Ianni.
Steve Purdy was issued a red card in the 76th minute for Cal, after fouling Wynn. Purdy took Wynn down from behind on a scoring attempt, which forced Cal to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
Still the Golden Bears didn't go down without a fight, tabbing 11 shots, five of which were shots on goal. With five minutes remaining in the game, sophomore forward Javier Hil tried to tie the score, but UCLA keeper Eric Reed made the diving save. Two minutes later Cal came close to scoring again, when freshman midfielder Pat Marion headed the ball towards the goal off a corner kick, but was saved by the Bruins.
Senior defender Jordan Harvey ensured the win for UCLA when he scored in the final seconds of the game. With the clock ticking down, sophomore forward Kamani Hill passed the ball to Harvey, who scored with eight seconds remaining on the clock.
Calen Carr, the leading scorer in the Pac-10 and for Cal, took a team high four shots including one in the box that just missed high in the 32nd minute.
The Bears face San Diego State Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2:30 p.m. at SDSU Sports Deck to wrap up their first weekend of Pac-10 play.
