March 29, 2013

On a busy day that saw the Golden Bears compete in three meets across two time zones, members of the Cal track & field team posted a number of impressive performances. Among the more notable achievements, Kelsey Santisteban moved to No. 3 in school history in the 5000 meters at the Stanford Invitational, while Hammed Suleman posted the Bears' best triple jump in 18 years at the Texas Relays.

In addition, several Cal runners were in action at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival Friday. The Bears will return a group of athletes to Stanford Saturday and have three competitors remaining at the Texas Relays in hurdler Ray Stewart and high jumpers Harrison Steed and Nick Ridge.

Santisteban completed the women's 5000 meters in 15:52.06, which puts her third on Cal's performer list behind record-holder and teammate Deborah Maier (15:29.24i) and Kirsten O'Hara (15:46.80 from 1985). Earlier this year, Santisteban went 16:01.70 during the indoor season. Running for the Bay Area Track Club in the 5K race, former Golden Bear Chelsea Reilly set a PR with her time of 15:13.24, nearly 45 seconds faster than she went as a collegiate senior last year.

Freshman Shelby Ashe, the American junior record holder in the hammer, made her Cal debut in the event at Stanford and recorded a best of 185-7, which puts her seventh in school history. Another newcomer, Ethan Cochran, missed the Cal freshman record in the discus by less than two feet with his effort of 183-0.

At the Texas Relays, Suleman finished with a PR distance of 53-4.50 in the triple jump to take second in the competition. It was the best mark by a Bear since Lenards Ozolinish went 54-2.50 back in 1995. Suleman later placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 24-5.75w.

Stewart qualified fifth for the final in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.67w in his heat. The 2011 Pac-10 champion in the event, he is making a comeback from knee surgery that kept him out last season.

Freshman Noel Frazier matched his personal best in the high jump by clearing 6-11.75. He initially tied for first in the B section with Jonathan Fuller of Kansas, but Fuller won a jump off to claim the title.

At the San Francisco State meet, a pair of performances earned spots on the Cal all-time chart. Molly Babcock now ranks fifth with her time of 11:08.26 in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, and James Slater took over the No. 10 position with a 29:52.29 finish in the men's 10,000 meters.
