BERKELEY - The No. 13 California men's soccer team opened the 2008 campaign by scoring three goals on its first three shots of the season en route to a 3-1 victory over UC Riverside, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears got their season off on the right foot at 1-0.
Cal wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. In the fourth minute of the contest, Senior Pat Marion headed a cross pass from sophomore Servando Carrasco that tucked underneath the crossbar for the first goal of the match. Less than five minutes later, the Bears were on the board again. Sophomore Andrew Wiedeman picked up a loose ball and booted it into the net. Carrasco recorded an assist on the score.
The third score came in the 12th minute as Wiedeman secured his second goal of the game. Sophomore Hector Jimenez fed a pass to Wiedeman who beat the keeper to give Cal an early commanding 3-0 lead. Jimenez earned an assist on the first score of the match as well.
Junior keeper Stefan Frei allowed one goal and made three saves. The lone goal he allowed came in the 34th minute. Cesar Diaz from UC Riverside (0-1) blasted a shot just past the outstretched Frei.
