No. 2 Golden Bears Win Two at Day One of Southern California Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. - The 2006 National Champion Cal men's water polo team defeated its first two opponents at the Southern California Tournament -- beating Ponoma-Pitzer, 17-2, and Long Beach State, 11-7. The Golden Bears improve to 15-1 and will play Stanford on Sunday in a semifinal match.

Cal limited Pomona-Pitzer to just one goal in the first half, shutting out the Sagehens completely in the second quarter. The Bears opened the game with a four-goal first period. The Golden Bears came out firing following halftime, scoring seven goals. Pomona-Pitzer tallied its final goal of the game in the fourth quarter. Junior Trent Calder led the Bears with four goals and Jacob McIntosh notched seven saves in goal.

In the second game of the day, the 49ers threatened immediately when they outscored the Bears 2-0 to open the game. California responded with four unanswered goals and later capitalized on a five-goal second period to build an insurmountable lead. Kevin Mundia and Reid Tomassi scored man-advantage goals in the first three minutes to give the 49ers their 2-0 lead before Frank Reynolds, Zac Monsees, Scott Cruikshank and Vladislav Andreyev scored consecutive goals for the Golden Bears. Cal's Spencer Warden led all scorers with three goals while Mundia and Ashley Blythen led the 49ers with two each.
