Bears host St. Mary's on Tuesday

BERKELEY - The California Golden Bear softball team (6-4) hosts St. Mary's (2-2) on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m., before traveling to the Palm Springs Classic, Feb. 23-25. Cal faces Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Maryland in the three-day tournament.

Rankings: Cal is ranked 10th in the ESPN/USA Softball Top-25 poll and 11th in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25 poll. Both polls are released weekly (Tuesday and Wednesday respectively).

Cal Perfect against SMC: The Bears have posted an impressive 40-0 series record vs. St. Mary's dating back to the 1989 season. The Bears defeated the Gaels, 7-0 and 9-2 in a doubleheader last season.

Bear Bits: Cal went 3-3 in last weeks action, collecting wins against San Jose State, Florida International, and Utah State ... The Bears struggled to find their offense in the first two days of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic (Feb. 16-18), falling to Mississippi State, Colorado State, and Northwestern ... Cal responded however in a big way in the final day of the tournament defeating Florida International, 12-4 and Utah State, 13-1 ... Cal's 12-4 win over Florida International gave head coach Diane Ninemire 860 career victories ... Sunday (Feb. 18) marked the first time since 2005 that Cal had back-to-back double digit run games ... Bernice Masaniai's three-run home run vs. FIU was the first home run this season for Cal ... Lauren Frankiewicz has recorded 20 strikeouts in her last three starts ... Cal combined for 25 runs on 23 hits and 10 steals in the final day of the tournament.

Quick Team Notes: Cal is 5-0 this season when scoring six or more runs ... The Bears are 6-0 when scoring first, but -04 when their opponent scores first ... Cal has outscored its opposition, 25-8 in the first two innings this season ...The Bears have hit only hit one home run this season.

Quick Player Notes: Frankiewicz leads the pitching staff with a 1.69 ERA and 25 strikeouts ... Shannon Houston leads the team with seven stolen bases (she has not been caught stealing) ... Houston had three steals vs. Florida International on Feb. 18 ... Brittany LaRosa leads the pitching staff in innings pitched (22.1) ... LaRosa has only given up five hits in her last 6.1 innings pitched (of those five, only two have been extra base hits) ... Masaniai has recorded five RBI in her last two games ... Morgan Siegel has had three games with two stolen bases ... Siegel has scored five runs in her last two games ... Katie Vickers has had at least one RBI in six of the 10 games played this season.
