BERKELEY - The University of California and Kansas State will play the first game of the 2003 college football season on Saturday, Aug. 23, when they square off in the BCA Football Classic at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. PDT and will be broadcast to a nationwide audience on ESPN Television.
Proceeds from the game, founded by the Black Coaches Association in 1997, provide college scholarships for minority students throughout the country. Last year's contest featured Nebraska and Arizona State, with the Cornhuskers prevailing, 48-10, in Lincoln, Neb.
"We consider it a privilege to participate in the BCA Classic," said Cal's Jeff Tedford, the 2002 Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year. "There is prestige and national attention given to this kickoff game each year, and we want our players to enjoy the atmosphere surrounding the event. We have tremendous respect for Bill Snyder and the Kansas State program. It should be an entertaining and exciting matchup for both those fans in attendance and those watching on the ESPN national telecast."
In his first season at the helm, Tedford engineered the greatest one-year turnaround in major college football last season. The Golden Bears, who endured a nightmarish 1-10 year in 2001, posted their first winning record (7-5) in nine seasons last fall. Beating three nationally-ranked teams-Michigan State, Washington and Arizona State-on the road for the first time in school history, Cal ranked among the nation's Top 10 in scoring (35.6 ppg., 10th ), fumble recoveries (21, 2nd), total takeaways (36, 7th) and turnover margin (+18, 7th) last season.
Kansas State, a perennial national juggernaut under Snyder, posted an 11-2 record last year. The Wildcats, ranked No. 6 by USA Today/ESPN and No. 7 by Associated Press in the final 2002 national polls, defeated Arizona State, 34-27, in last year's Holiday Bowl.
