BERKELEY - The postseason accolades keep coming in for the 2010 California baseball program as freshman right fielder/designated hitter/third baseman Tony Renda and freshman left-hander Justin Jones have been named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans, it was announced today (June 9) by national baseball publication Collegiate Baseball.
Renda and Jones are the sixth and seventh Freshman All-Americans in the program's history. In 1998, Xavier Nady was named the National Freshman of the Year in both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America. Overall, Cal has had 39 All-America honorees, including nine since David Esquer became the Bears' coach in 2000.
Both Renda (Hillsborough, Calif.) and Jones (Oakdale, Calif.) were recently selected first-team All-Pac-10 as well. Renda was also named to the 2010 Norman (Okla.) Regional All-Tournament team. The Cal slugger was 5-for-9 with two doubles and two RBI this past weekend at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Cal's contests versus North Carolina and Oral Roberts.
Renda was extremely productive the last two weeks of the 2010 campaign versus Oregon and at the NCAA Regional hosted by the University of Oklahoma, going an impressive 13-for-21 (.619) with five doubles, four RBI and 18 total bases. He finished his first collegiate season as the Bears' leading hitter with a .373 average, third-best in the Pac-10. Renda is also ranks in the Top-10 in the conference in doubles (fourth, 21), triples (fifth, 4), runs (fifth, 55), hits (sixth, 81), stolen bases (eighth, 13) and total bases (eighth, 119).
Renda's 21 doubles is tied for third on the school's all-time list (with Jon Zuber and currently Detroit Tiger outfielder Brennan Boesch). He recorded 37 RBI with a .548 slugging percentage and a .427 on-base percentage as well.
Jones is third in the Pac-10 with 10 wins (10-6, 4.22 ERA), sixth with 30 strikeouts looking and eighth with 98.0 innings pitched. He was a part of two shutouts and threw two complete games this season, including a 6-4 victory March 12 at Rice. Jones' 10 victories as a freshman tied him for sixth on the Cal all-time single-season list.
So far, Cal has had four players named All-Pac-10 (Mark Canha, Chadd Krist, Renda, Canha), one player named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year (Brian Guinn), three players named Pac-10 honorable mention (Erik Johnson, Marcus Semien, Danny Oh) and five players drafted (Dixon Anderson, Brian Diemer, Mark Canha, Brian Guinn, Daniel Wolford).
In addition, the Bears had Anderson named to the CoSIDA District 8 All-Academic team, and four players (Anderson, Diemer, Canha, Johnson) named Pac-10 All-Academic.
