The Cal men's varsity eight won it's heat and advanced to the grand final at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay, April 6. In the Bears victory over Oregon St. and Temple, Cal recorded a time of 5:58.6-the fastest of the morning. Cal is undefeated over the the last three seasons and has been ranked No. 1 since April of 1999. The varsity eight is the three-time defending champion in the Copley Cup event at the Crew Classic.

"The varsity in the opening heat was somewhat contained," said coach Stephen Gladstone. "People come off the water and there is no particular sense of satisfaction, but that is the way a heat is. Tomorrow's the final."

Cal's varsity took the early lead off the start and was comfortable with a length advantage over Temple at the 1000-meter mark. Oregon State moved through Temple in the second 1000 while Cal maintained its leading position through the finish. These three crews advanced to Sunday's final. In the other qualification heat, No. 3 Washington led from wire to wire with Stanford and Yale also advancing.

The Bears have two eights in the JV competition. In the first heat, Cal's JV eight got out to a sizeable advantage over Yale and Stanford and rowed conservatively through the finish to advance. In the second JV heat Cal's third varsity eight finished behind Washington and just off the pace of Oregon State to advance to tomorrow's JV eight grand final.

The Cal frosh eight got its frosh taste of collegiate competition with a strong race in qualification for the Men's Collegiate Novice Eight garnd final. The Bears with Oregon State also advancing. Other crews that qualified for the frosh final include heat winners, Washington and Stanford, as well as Orange Coast and George Washington.
