(GLENVIEW, IL) - Incoming Cal freshman Michael Kim was the only one of six players affiliated with the Cal men's golf to make the cut Wednesday and advance to third-round action in the 109th Western Amateur at the North Shore Country Club.
Kim shot a one-over par 72 for the second consecutive day and is tied for 40th at two-over par 144 for the tournament. He had third birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars for the second consecutive round. Kim narrowly made the cut to the low 44 and ties that came in at two-over par.
Brandon Hagy (71-74 - 145, +3), who had been tied for 28th and the top Cal affiliate on the scoreboard at the end of the first day, missed the cut by a single stroke and finished tied for 56th. Hagy's three-over par 74 on Wednesday included four bogeys and only a single birdie on the par-four fifth hole. He had fired six birdies during Tuesday's opening round.
Chris Williams (66-66 - 132, -10) shot his second consecutive five-under par round on Wednesday to take a three-shot lead over Jordan Spieth (66-69 - 135, -7). The two had been tied for the lead at the conclusion of the first round.
A total of 55 players will play 36 holes Thursday to determine which 16 will continue on to match play. Thursday's action begins at 7:30 a.m. CT/5:30 a.m. PT. The round of 16 and quarterfinal rounds of match play are scheduled for Friday, with the semifinals and final slated for Saturday.
