Cal Women's Gymnasts Fall at Utah State
January 29, 1999
LOGAN, Utah - The California women's gymnastics team suffered its second loss of the season Friday night, falling to Utah State, 192.950-180.425, at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on the USU campus. The loss dropped Cal to 2-2 on the season, while Utah State improved to 3-0 with the win.
The Golden Bears, who have been ravaged by injuries, competed with a skeleton crew of only seven gymnasts during the meet and it ended up costing them. Cal's top vaulter, Paula Chang, was slated to perform fourth in that event, but was unable to compete. As a result, Cal was only able to count four of the possible five scores in that event and it put the Bears in a hole they would never dig out of.
Utah State's Christy Denson led the way for the Aggies, capturing the all-around title with a score of 39.175. Denson, who finished in the Top 3 on every event, also won the bars and beam competitions. In fact, the Aggies took home event titles on all four apparatus.
However, the meet was not without bright spots for the Bears. Freshman Lindsay Baker posted personal bests in every event en route to a third place finish in the all-around competition with a career-high score of 38.175. Leila Khoury also had a solid evening for Cal with second place finishes on both vault (9.625) and floor (9.800). Three other Bears also registered career best scores: Paula Chang (bars 9.025;floor 9.625), Kristine Kaibara (beam 9.575) and Hlene Kenny (beam 9.625;floor 9.625).
Cal returns home for its next competition next Friday, Feb. 6, when the Bears host Pac-10 foe Arizona at 7:30 p.m. at the Recreational Sports Facility on the Cal campus.
