LOS ANGELES - In another match decided in doubles play, No. 14 ranked UCLA fell just short of its second upset of the weekend falling to No. 8 ranked Cal, 5-4, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. The match was even at three after singles play as UCLA registered wins in the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 positions and Cal took Nos. 1, 4 and 6. Cal rode the momentum from the final singles victory and claimed the first two doubles matches to prevent the upset. Cal improved its record to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in Pac-10 play, while UCLA slipped to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in Pac-10 action.

In doubles action, Cal claimed the Nos. 1 and 2 matches to post the team victory. First to finish in doubles was court No. 2 where Esther Knox and Anita Kurimay handled UCLA's Cristina Popescu and Elizabeth Schmidt, 8-1. The decisive match was completed minutes later on court No. 1 as Amanda Augustus and Amy Jensen defeated Annica Cooper and Katia Roubanova, 8-3.

Due to a marathon match on court No. 4, singles play lasted three hours and 15 minutes. Cal's Anita Kurimay notched the victory, but UCLA's Kelly Rudolph fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to force a tiebreaker, then claimed the second set 7-5 before sucumming 7-5 in the third. The match on court No. 3 lasted just short of three hours and featured a tiebreak finish in the third set in which UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) over Cal's Amy Jensen.

Tiebreakers also played a part in two other singles matches, UCLA claimed one and Cal the other. The Bruins won on court No. 2 as Cristina Popescu defeated Esther Knox 7-6(3), 6-3. The Golden Bears won in the No. 6 slot as Stephanie Tibbits defeated Katia Roubanova 7-6(6), 6-1 in Roubanova's first singles dual match of the year.

Only two singles matches were decided in uncomplicated straight sets, and again those decisions were split down the middle. Cal claimed the first match completed as Amanda Augustus defeated Annica Copper 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 position. UCLA evened the score a short time later as Kati Kocsis defeated Francesca La'O 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 5 slot.

Today's match was rescheduled from yesterday due to rain. UCLA concludes the home portion of its dual match schedule this coming week with three matches at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins host Washington and Washington State on Thursday and Friday, April 9-10, respectively with both slated to start at 1:30 p.m. UCLA's home finale will be Sunday, April 12 against Oregon at Noon.
