BERKELEY - California has been ranked No. 12 in the FWAA's preseason Grantland Rice Poll that ranks the nation's Top 15 teams and was released on Monday. The No. 12 showing is the same spot the Bears check in at in both the Associated Press and USA Today's coaches preseason polls.
Defending national champion Florida is the country's top-ranked team in the poll, picking up 20 of the 21 first-place votes.
Texas checks in at No. 2, while No. 3 Oklahoma had the only first-place vote not garnered on Florida. USC and Alabama are ranked No. 4 and No. 5, while Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Mississippi, Oklahoma State and Penn State round out the Top 10. The final five teams selected in the poll were LSU, California, Oregon, Boise State and Georgia (tied for 14th).
The Golden Bears will open their 2009 campaign by hosting Maryland in a nationally televised ESPN2 contest at Memorial Stadium this Saturday, September 5 (7 p.m.).
