18 Bears Named to Pac-10 All-Academic Teams

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Pac-10 Conference named 18 California Golden Bears to its 2006 Pac-10 All-Academic Men's Swimming and Diving Teams, with five reaching the first team. Those five Bears are sophomore Eric Dunipace (3.84 grade-point average, molecular and cell biology major), senior Chris Gibson (3.75, film), sophomore Paul Hernandez (3.90, chemistry), senior Ryan Lean (3.62, legal studies/ISF) and sophomore Justin Pollard (3.90, undeclared).

Cal, which took sixth place at the NCAA Championships and second place at the Pac-10 Championships this year, put six athletes on the second team: senior Matt Lyon (3.11, psychology); junior Graham Lentz (3.15, American studies); and sophomores Jernej Godec (3.30, undeclared), Michael Jafari (3.24, undeclared), Dominik Meichtry (3.18, undeclared) and Louis Vayo (3.49, undeclared).

Seven Bears garnered Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention: seniors Milorad Cavic and Evan Lane; junior Alexander Holdridge; and sophomores William Copeland, Richard Hunter, Javier Rivas and Mark Wes.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
