Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano turned the tennis world on its ear in 2003 - dominating in doubles play. Now with the departure of Fusano due to graduation, the two are reunited again one final time to receive a prestigious honor.
Kops-Jones and Fusano have been named to the 2003 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Star Team. The two will be honored on August 22 at the historic West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, N.Y. The 20th edition of this event is presented by The Nick Bollettieri Academy, which has produced players such as Andre Agassi, Monica Seles, Tommy Haas, Jim Courier, and Anna Kournikova.
As individuals, Kops-Jones and Fusano both were ranked nationally at the end of the regular season - No. 6 and No. 25, respectively. Both players also received All Pac-10 accolades. But their biggest accomplishments came in the spring of 2003, when they meshed their talents together.
After being named National Doubles Team of the Month in March and April and winning their second consecutive Pac-10 Doubles Championship later in May, the pair set their sights on a much higher goal.
Riding the momentum of a stellar regular season the two steam rolled through the competition at the NCAA Championships, placing an exclamation mark with a convincing win (6-1, 6-2) in the championship match versus Kentucky's Sarah Witten and Amy Trefethen.
With a (37-10) overall record for the 2002-03 season, Kops-Jones and Fusano finished the year ranked No. 3 nationally and were named ITA Doubles Team of the Year.
