Tedford Announces 2-Deep for Baylor Opener

Release:  08/22/2002

Aug. 22, 2002

BERKELEY - With the Baylor opener less than 10 days away, head coach Jeff Tedford announced his team's two-deep for the contest Thursday.

The veteran group includes 20 seniors and 11 juniors, and the only newcomer to join the starting lineup is wide receiver Jonathan Makonnen, a transfer from San Francisco City College who secured his spot despite playing with a broken finger through the fall camp practice sessions.

The offensive unit boasts six players who started last year's opener against Illinois - quarterback Kyle Boller, tailback Joe Igber, tight end Tom Swoboda, wide receiver Geoff McArthur, guard Scott Tercero and tackle Mark Wilson. Tercero and Wilson played on the right side of the line last fall, but have switched to the left side for this season. In addition, senior Ryan Jones, who had seven starts in 2001, will be Cal's starting center.

The defense also has six starters from the '01 Illinois contest - end Tully Banta-Cain, tackles Daniel Nwangwu and Josh Beckham, linebackers John Klotsche and Matt Nixon and rover Nnamdi Asomugha. Cornerback James Bethea had eight starts and safety Bert Watts earned three for the Bears in 2001, and both re-claimed their positions again this season.
