FUKUSHIMA PREFECTURE, Japan - California began the 2003-04 season with a 20-shot victory Thursday at The Top Cup U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship at the Tanagura Country Club. The Golden Bears, who led after each round, fired the low third-round team score (301) to finish the tournament at plus-30 894.
The Top Cup title comes on the heels of the Bears' nation's-best seven tournament victories in 2002-03, including the season opener at the Oregon State Invitational.
Tohoku Fukushi placed second with a 914, following the team's score of 303 on Thursday. South Carolina, the only other U.S. squad participating in the women's competition, began the day in second but the Bulldogs' third-round score of 317 dropped them to third at 925. Nagoya University of Commerce took fourth at 936, while Nippon Sports Science University was fifth at 945.
Cal senior Sarah Huarte led the individual race after the first two rounds but wound up tied for second at 221 after shooting a 77 today. Doshisha University's C. Tsunekawa won the tournament as an individual at plus-two 218.
Also placing in the top 10 for the Bears were senior Anna Temple in fifth with a career 54-hole low score of 222, sophomore Sophia Sheridan in sixth at 224 and senior Claire Dury in a tie for eighth at 228. Temple and Sheridan performed the best for Cal in the final round by carding rounds of 73 and 74, respectively.
The Bears don't compete again until the Oct. 6-8 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash.
