BERKELEY, Calif. - Street & Smith has selected California sophomore center/forward Devanei Hampton for preseason high honorable mention All-America recognition and Golden Bears sophomore guard Alexis Gray-Lawson as an honorable mention choice.
Street & Smith picked a Terrific 10, and then named the next 10 best players in the country as high honorable mention selections. The honorable mention list includes another 24 nationally-regarded players.
As a freshman in 2005-06, Hampton led Cal and ranked seventh in the Pac-10 in scoring at 15.4 ppg, becoming only the 10th freshman to ever be a first-team All-Pac-10 selection. The Pac-10 All-Freshman pick paced the Bears and ranked third in the conference in rebounding at 7.9 rpg and topped the Pac-10 in offensive rebounding at 2.89 rpg. The 6-3 native of Oakland led all Pac-10 rookies in scoring and rebounding last season and holds the distinction of being only the third freshman to ever lead Cal in scoring.
Gray-Lawson became the first Cal women's basketball player to ever be chosen the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year last season after ranking ninth in the conference in scoring at 14.6 ppg and fifth in three-point percentage at 38.9. The 5-8 product from Oakland also led the Bears in assists (2.7 apg) and three-pointers made (42) and ranked fourth on the team in rebounding (3.9 rpg) last year. Gray-Lawson joined Hampton on the 2005-06 Women's Basketball News Service and Pac-10 All-Freshman teams.
Cal opens the 2006-07 regular season against Saint Mary's Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at Haas Pavilion on the heels of an 18-12 record and first-round NCAA Tournament appearance last year.
