Bears Finish Third at Stanford Open

BERKELEY - The Golden Bear men's gymnastics team finished third at the Stanford open on Saturday night, scoring a 425.900. The Golden Bears received some outstanding individual performances, and four gymnasts wearing the blue and gold won individual events. Freshmen Kevin Wolting and Kyle Zemeir tied for second in the all around competition with a 84.050.

Stanford won the event, with Oklahoma taking second and Nebraska finishing in fourth. The Bears received much better performances from all their athletes on the evening, beating their total score from their first meet by over a dozen points. Though Cal did not win any events as a team, a Golden Bear stood on top of the podium on four of six events.

Zemeir won the high bar by scoring a new season high of 15.000. Senior Steven Lacombe won the rings with his new season high of 15.500. Sophomore Matthew del Junco won the pommel horse with a score of 14.950. And finally, junior Jeffrey Langenstein matched his score from last week of 15.650 on floor and won the competition for a second straight meet.

As a team, the Bears finished third on floor with a 74.150. They also finished third on pommel horse and rings with scores of 69.700 and 71.000, respectively. They finished second on vault with a 72.700. On parallel bars, the Golden Bears finished fourth with a 66.050. Finally, Cal finished second on the high bar with a 72.300.

The Golden Bears next compete on Saturday, Feb. 2 in Ann Arbor, Mich. against the University of Michigan.
