BERKELEY - The California women's basketball team hosted its most successful JAM Fest in four years on June 1 at Haas Pavilion and at the Recreational Sports Facility. After attracting 16 teams to the first event in 2000, this year's gathering featured 36 high school teams from all over Northern California.

"It was exciting to have so many teams get together to play against great competition and to see other schools that they usually don't get a chance to play," said Cal head coach Caren Horstmeyer. "I hope the athletes also benefited from being exposed to a university of this status."

Teams played four games in one day and were given the opportunity to participate in clinics and to take a campus tour. Cal assistant coaches Camille Burkes and Kirsten McKnight led a team building clinic, while assistant Barb Smith oversaw the ball handling clinic. Golden Bear basketball players Kristine Iwanaga, Sarah Pool, Jacqueline Sanchez and Luana Coloma helped out with JAM Fest.

Adding to the fun-filled environment was that many parents and friends were on hand to cheer on the athletes.

"JAM Fest is part of Cal women's basketball's ongoing goal of being good role models for younger players and for student-athletes," said Horstmeyer.
