WOODLAND, CALIF. - California junior attacker Collin Smith has been named the KAP7 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Golden Bears to a commanding 14-8 victory over Stanford in the Oct. 20 Big Splash at Spieker Aquatics Complex, it was announced late Monday (Oct. 22) by MPSF commissioner Al Beaird.
Smith, a 6-1, 188-pound standout from Carlsbad, Calif., was outstanding in the Bears' Big Splash victory that gave Kirk Everist's squad the Steve Heaston Trophy for the second year in a row. The Steve Heaston Trophy is named after the former Cal water polo coach (1989-98, three NCAA titles) who passed away in 1999.
Smith had a goal in the second period when the Bears shut out the Cardinal, 4-0, and then was a scoring force with three goals in the third period, including back-to-back goals with 58 seconds and 32 second left in the quarter. He added two goals in the fourth period to finish with five goals in the final 16 minutes of the contest. Smith leads Cal (10-6) in scoring this season with 46 goals in 16 matches (2.88 goals per game, third in the MPSF). He also paces the Bears with 23 assists on the year.
It was the second POW honor for Smith this season. He was the Sept. 10 MPSF POW when he scored six goals in a 17-4 victory over MIT during the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 9, and finished the five matches over the Sept. 7-9 weekend in New Jersey with 19 goals, averaging 3.8 goals per match.
Smith was a 2011 honorable mention All-America as a sophomore with 26 goals, 20 steals and 28 assists, including match-winning goals in MPSF wins over UC Santa Barbara and Pacific.
The Bears (10-6, 1-2) next host Long Beach State (18-4, 0-1) in an MPSF league match on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 12 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The 49ers are coached by former Cal All-American and Olympian Gavin Arroyo.
