Cal Diver Sam Helvie Places Second in One-Meter Board at Zone E Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. - University of California standout junior diver, Sam Helvie, placed second in the one-meter board Friday at the Zone E Diving Regional in Oklahoma City, Okla. Helvie, from Bakersfield, Calif., had a score of 337.55 in the morning preliminary round, and came back to have the highest score of the meet in the final round with a mark of 370.45. In the final combined tally, he trailed only winner Magnus Frick of Hawaii, 726.00 to 708.00.

Freshman Thomas Henninger was ninth on the one-meter board with a score of 573.40, while fellow freshman Taylor Dehn was 11th with a score of 547.45 and junior Brian Lawler was 17th with a mark of 506.50.

On Thursday in the three-meter competition, Helvie had placed seventh with a score of 311.05. Other Cal competitors in the three-meter board were Dehn, who was ninth with a score of 294.90; Henninger, who was 10th with a mark of 294.75 and Lawler, who was 18th with a score of 254.40.

Earlier, Helvi was named Pac-10 Divers of the Month for January, when he captured the one-meter title against both Arizona and Arizona State during the last weekend of January. Against the Wildcats, Helvie scored 346.65 on the one-meter and a 321.60 on the three-meter for second place. Against the Sun Devils, he improved on his one-meter score to record a season-best of 351.52 and placed third on the three-meter with a score of 324.37.

Since January, Helvie has won the one-meter board in his hometown, Feb. 7, at Cal State Bakersfield; won the one and three-meter competition at USC Feb. 8; and won both the one and three-meter board at Stanford, Feb. 23. He has won a total of seven competitions this season.

Last year, Helvie was an honorable mention All-American, placing 12th on the one-meter board at the 2007 NCAA Championships. He was also the January 2007 Pac-10 Diver of the Month and was a second-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection. Helvie is the Cal school record-holder in the one-meter (375.92, set in 2006), three-meter (381.15, set in 2007) and platform (279.90, set in 2007) competitions.
