Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats Long Beach State at MPSF Tournament

NEWPORT BEACH, CA - The No. 5 ranked University of California men's water polo team (12-11) defeated No. 8 ranked Long Beach State (10-16), 9-7, in the consolation semifinal of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in Newport Beach, CA.
The Bears senior two-meter man Ryan Flynn scored four goals to lead Cal to the victory over the 49ers. Cal broke a 3-3 tie with 30 seconds left in the first half on a goal by Flynn and never looked back. The Bears outscored Long Beach State, 5-4, in the second half, with sophomore Jerry Smith scoring two goals in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. Cal was also led by two goals by senior Brad Kittredge and a goal by junior Albert Won. The Bears senior goalie Peter Kiefer had an outstanding match with seven saves.
The Bears will next play No. 3 ranked UCLA Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the fifth-place match
