Stanford - Senior Alex Sutton's fifth inning three-run home run over the right field wall in Smith Family Stadium helped boost California to a 3-0 win over Bay Area rival Stanford on Thursday night. The victory snapped the Golden Bears' six-game losing streak, and gave them their first Pac-10 win of the season.
Cal (24-19, 1-3) returns to Levine-Fricke Field for the first time since Mar. 7 tomorrow for a game versus the tenth-ranked Cardinal (26-8, 2-2) at 3:00 p.m. Cal then wraps up the three-game series versus Stanford on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Berkeley as well.
It was just the second loss for Stanford at home this season.
Lauren Frankiewicz collected her first victory in the circle since Mar. 23, allowing three hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.
After Julie Meyer reached on a fielder's choice in the fifth, (Vernae Sevilla was out on the play after she hit a single up the middle in her at bat) Morgan Siegel punched a single to left field to move Meyer to second base. Sutton then drove a deep blast over the right field wall to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. It was her eighth home run of the season.
Frankiewicz did the rest with a strong pitching performance, preventing any Stanford rally in the sixth and seventh innings.
