BERKELEY - Dana Vollmer moved closer to securing a spot on the U.S. Olympic roster for the Beijing Games when she swam a 58.46 in the preliminaries of the 100-meter butterfly at the Olympic Trials on Sunday morning, followed by a 58.55 in the semifinals in the evening to advance to Monday night's final, making her the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.
The youngest person ever at the U.S. Olympic Trials when she competed in 2000 at the age of 12, Vollmer took gold at the 2007 World Championships in the 800-meter freestyle relay, where her team set a world record. She was the 2007 NCAA champion in the 100 butterfly and has been a Pac-10 champion twice at Cal in the same event. In February she set a new Cal dual meet record with her time of 1:53.96 in the 200 butterfly, breaking the 1986 mark set by Mary T. Meagher.
