No. 6/7 California (28-2) Wins Two More

GREENVILLE, N.C. - No. 6/7 California (28-2) picked up two more wins, outlasting Kent State, 3-2, and dominating Buffalo, 13-0, in the second day of the Pirate Invitational hosted by East Carolina.

In the afternoon game against Kent State, Cal went up 1-0 in the first inning. Kent State tied it up 1-1 in the top of the seventh, forcing the game to go to extra innings. Both teams scored in the eighth, tying it at 2-2. But Cal tallied the game's final run in the top of the ninth for the win.

In the eighth, sophomore Erika Racklin was placed on second per international tie-breaker rules. Senior Haley Woods led off the inning with a double, sending Racklin home. In the ninth, freshman Carly Winger started on second and was driven home on a single from sophomore Katie Vickers.

In the first, senior Lindsay James scored on a sacrifice fly from Woods. James reached base on a walk.

Senior Kristina Thorson earned her 17th win of the season, holding Kent State to five hits in nine innings. She struck out 17 of 35 batters.

Cal finished the day with a 13-0 win over Buffalo. James led the Bears, finishing 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.

The Bears scored two in the first and second innings, five in the third and four in the fourth.

In the first, junior Alex Sutton hit a two-run double, scoring seniors Emily Friedman and James. Both Friedman and James reached base on a walk. Freshman Gina Leomiti led off the second with a solo home run. The inning's other run was recorded by sophomore Julie Meyer.

The Bears got it going in the fifth when they loaded the bases early in the inning. Friedman led off with a triple, Sutton walked and Vickers reached on a fielder's choice. Friedman scored when Leomiti reached base after being hit by a pitch, advancing all three runners. James singled later in the inning, scoring Sutton. Winger capped off the explosive inning with a three-run double, sending James, Leomiti and Vickers home.

Cal finished up its offensive onslaught with a four-run fourth inning. Vickers connected for an RBI single, scoring Sutton. Vickers later scored on a wild pitch. Racklin drove home Meyer later in the inning on an RBI single. Meyer had walked to reach base.

Freshman Lauren Frankiewicz improved to 10-0 on the season, striking out 12 of the 21 batters she faced.
