BERKELEY - Former Cal golfer James Hahn is scheduled to be interviewed Wednesday evening on NBC Bay Area News. The program is scheduled to be broadcast on Comcast digital cable channel 186 beginning at 7 p.m. PT. Hahn was one of two former Cal golfers along with Charlie Wi to earn spots in the 2012 U.S. Open field by winning sectional qualifying events Monday. The 2012 U.S. Open will take place June 14-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Hahn, who played at Cal from 1999-2001, fired an eight-under par 136 over his 36 holes to win by one stroke over four others at the Lake Merced Country Club/TPC Harding Park site in Daly City. Hahn's performance Monday completed an amazing two days on opposite sides of the country. After winning his first event on the Nationwide Tour on Sunday at The Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh, N.C., Hahn flew back to the Bay Area for a 7 a.m. PT tee time at Lake Merced and promptly fired a six-under par round of 66. He followed that with a solid two-under par round of 70 at Harding Park.
Sectional qualifying is the final stage before U.S. Open hopefuls get to the championship itself. The USGA offered 13 sectional sites - 11 in the U.S. that took place Monday and Tuesday, and two overseas in Japan and England that had previously taken place. Nearly 1,000 golfers competed at one of the sectional qualifying sites with 75 qualifying to play in the 2012 U.S. Open.
