BERKELEY, Calif. - The Pac-10 Conference named California freshman Sam Helvie its Pac-10 Diver of the Month for December after the Bakersfield, Calif., product won the platform title on Dec. 3, 2005, at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas. Helvie scored 282.85, and became the first Golden Bear diver to win an event at the invitational.
This is the first monthly honor for Helvie and California's first Diver of the Month all-time.
More recently, Helvie set a school record (375.92) and beat decorated Arizona State All-American Joona Puhakka when the former won the one-meter springboard in last Friday's 159-78 dual-meet win over the Sun Devils. Helvie also won the one-meter board (332.92) in last Saturday's 202-98 dual-meet win over Arizona.
Cal does not compete this week but has busy slate the following week. The Bears take on Cal State Bakersfield in a non-scoring meet at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, in Bakersfield, Calif. At 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, Cal faces fellow Pac-10 power USC in Los Angeles. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, UC Santa Barbara hosts Cal in a non-scoring meet in Santa Barbara, Calif.
